Disney Day 1 - Epcot

Published May 4, 2021

Today we went to Epcot for a brief late morning visit.

They open at 11am and so are really open earlier. We went on the boat ride through their indoor vegetable/fruit gardens, saw a movie about Canada, found the shops in the England section are much less interesting than normal, and saw a Beauty and the Beast sing-along film.

The Canada film is new vs the one the used to have and it’s narrated by Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara which was fun. The sing-along was better than I though though I won’t need to see it again. The shopping seems less interesting since Disney shopping everywhere in parks seems less interesting. I’m wondering if it’s tied to lower attendance and a need to turn over merchandise faster so they are mostly stocking conventional Disney items.

Lunch was at the sit down restaurant in the France pavilion and it was amazing.

I had the beef bourguignon which was perfect and amazing as usual. I hope I’m able to make it that well someday. My mom had a chicken salad that had absolutely perfectly cooked and seasoned chicken breast. It was very educational in all.

We skipped dessert so we could get ice cream from the French house made ice cream shop that is in the park. It was still wonderful. Maybe the best ice cream I know. Of course it’s also really hot and it’s Disney so that factors in.

Speaking of heat, it’s hot. Do the masks make it worse? People complain about how awful it is to have to wear a mask at Disney.

Masks do make it worse. But even without a mask, it’s still really hot. It’s still Florida. Maybe the masks make it 5% worse. I don’t see them being a breaking point. It’s uncomfortable either way.

One last thing, it isn’t very crowded here. We know Disney is capping attendance at 35% but they aren’t even getting that far. First, there are only people from the US in attendance. Normally there are a lot of overseas guests but not now. Then school is in session, spring break happened recently, it isn’t summer so this is a slow season. As a result, very low crowds.

Oh, and we went over to the Magic Kingdom for a brief evening visit because it’s open later. Rode on a few rides (Peoplemover, Winnie the Pooh, Peter Pan).
